Description

FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene), also known as F46, is a copolymer of TFE and HFP, and is considered a modified version of PTFE. FEP is a softer fluoroplastic, meaning its tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and anti-creep properties are lower than many engineering plastics.

However, FEP compensates for PTFE’s limitation by offering thermoplastic melt-processing capability, enabling fine machining and shaping through extrusion or injection molding. This makes FEP a suitable replacement for PTFE in applications such as electrical wiring, aerospace components, and other precision-formed products.

Differences Between FEP and PTFE

• Material Family: Both are fluoroplastics.

• Melting Point:

  • FEP: ~260°C

  • PTFE: ~327°C (higher heat resistance)

• Processability:

  • FEP can be injection-molded and melt-processed.

  • PTFE cannot be melt-processed and is usually formed through molding or sintering.

• Use Case:
  FEP is preferred where high transparency, better processability, and good flexibility are needed, while PTFE is used when maximum high-temperature resistance and chemical stability are required.
